How the Bounce Manager works

To make sure it works properly, make sure you have a proper "Return-Path / Errors-To:" email address chosen in the "Script Settings" section.

I recommend to use: returnto@yourdomain.com

It's extremely important that this is an email address that you don't use otherwise. Only the script should read emails that arrive there.

Then make sure you have the email forwarder in cPanel for returnto@yourdomain.com set to forward emails to the bounce.pl script in your script installation directory, e.g. to: /home/username/public_html/mrp/bounce.pl

Once those are set properly, this how the build in Bounce Manager works...

Every time you send a message to a list and one of the emails is returned as not deliverable (for whatever reason), the system scans that email for the to the system known bounce phrases.

If it doesn't find any of the known bounce phrases in the message, it adds the message to the list of unknown bounce messages.

Then the admin can look at it and add a new bounce phrase to the system so this kind of messages can be handled automatically in the future. Alternatively the admin can also simply delete the unknown bounce message.

If the system recognizes a bounce phrase in the bounce message, it adds the to that bounce phrase assigned number of bounce points to that email address that bounced.

If the number of days since that email address received the last bounce points is larger than the number assigned in the 'Script Settings' section, the number of bounce points assigned to that email address is first reset to zero before the new points are added.

If the number of bounce points is still below the maximum number of bounce points assigned in the 'Script Settings' section, the subscriber remains subscribed.

If the number of bounce points reaches or exceeds the maximum number of bounce points assigned in the 'Script Settings' section, the subscriber will be unsubscribed automatically.

The admin can change at any time any of the settings, bounce phrases and assigned bounce points to the bounce phrases.
